I used ChatGPT to build custom software that gave my nonverbal brother his voice back (and a whole new life) My brother Ben has TUBB4A-related leukodystrophy, a rare neurodegenerative condition that left him nonverbal and quadriplegic. Because of his physical limitations and nystagmus, standard assistive technology and eye-tracking devices were ineffective, frustrating, and unengaging. I’m not a professional developer, but with ChatGPT acting as my coding copilot, I built a custom, switch-accessible communication hub and entertainment system from scratch in Python. It allows him to navigate menus, use a predictive text keyboard to speak, browse media, and play custom video games using just two head switches. It gave him his voice back, his independence, and a whole new life. We’ve open-sourced the software (Benny's Accessibility Hub) so other families dealing with similar challenges can use it for free.
