My mom is 84, Korean-born, and was struggling to describe medical symptoms in English. Despite living in the US since 1970, I worried about how she’d ever tell her English-speaking doctor what he needed. So I opened ChatGPT in Voice Mode and asked it to translate. It was amazing to hear ChatGPT say in Korean that she could describe her symptoms in Korean, whatever was most comfortable. The goosebumps came from listening to my mom slowly explain in Korean, in several more rounds of question and answer, and hearing how much more relaxed she was when she knew she was understood. Then I asked ChatGPT to produce an English readout for her doctor, precise enough to help with diagnosis.
