I rely on FaceTime and WhatsApp to stay connected to my family overseas. A dramatic improvement from the pricey international calling cards my dad used to call his mother on Sundays. But for me there’s still a language barrier. My in-laws speak French, and my French is not so good. Historically I used broken French plus Google Translate. Recently I started using ChatGPT to translate our conversations and it’s so much better. ChatGPT produces more authentic and idiomatic messages because I can prompt the translation with the context of our relationship.
